چکیده

The structure of moving nonlinear excitations in one-dimensional electronphonon systems is studied semi-phenomenologically by using an effective action in which the width of the nonlinear excitation is treated as a dynamical variable. The effective action can be derived from Su, Schrieffer and Heeger’s model or its continuum version proposed by Takayama, Lin-Liu and Maki with an assumption that the nonlinear excitation moves uniformly without any deformation except the change of its width. The form of the action is essentially the same as that discussed by Bishop and coworkers in studying the dynamics of the soliton in polyacetylene, though some details are different. For the moving excitation with a velocity v, the width is determined by minimizing the effective action. A requirement that there must be a minimum in the action as a function of its width provides a maximum velocity. The velocity dependence of the width and energy can be determined. The motions of a soliton in polyacetylene and an acoustic polaron in polydiacetylene are studied within this formulation. The obtained results are in good agreement with those of numerical simulations. Non-linear excitations in 1D correlated insulators

In this work we investigate charge transport in one-dimensional (1D) insulators via semi-classical and perturbative renormalization group (RG) methods. We consider the problem of electron-electron, electron-phonon and electrontwo-level system interactions. We show that non-linear collective modes such as polarons and solitons are reponsible for transport. We find a new excitation in the Mott in...

A Phenomenological Study on Inelastic Torsion Caused By Nonlinear Behavior Changes during Earthquake Excitations

Torsion of many symmetric structures, which were designed based on the seismic codes, is due to their asymmetricity induced during inelastic behavior. Although the structure was designed symmetrically assuming elastic based criteria, different factors such as material inconsistency in structure, construction details discrepancy and construction errors may result in asymmetric behavior in inelas...

Theory of Nonlinear s-Polarized Phonon-Polaritons in Multilayered Structures

A theory is presented for the dispersion relations of the nonlinear phonon-polaritons arising when phonons are coupled to the electromagnetic waves in multilayered structures of nonlinear materials. The calculations are applied to a multilayered structure consisting of a thin film surrounded by semi-infinite bounding media where each layer may have a frequency dependent dielectric function and ...

Some Aspects of Nonlinear Lattice Models

A theoretical study of various static and dynamic solutions in a one-dimensional lattice with anharmonic electron-ion coupling is presented. The stability of the different comnensurate groundstates is investigated and both kinkand phonon-excitations are described. The coupling of nonlinear excitations to phonons is discussed in detail. It was pointed out some time ago, that the microscopic orig...

Biomolecular dynamics of DNA: statistical mechanics and dynamical models

There is a growing feeling that biomolecular structure is not sufficient to determine biological activity which is also governed by large amplitude dynamics of the molecules. The transcription of DNA or its thermal denaturation are typical examples. Traditional approaches use Ising models to describe the denaturation transition of DNA. They have to introduce phenomenological "cooperativity fact...
